24/7/12 – Skull cake makes a special appearance at Bingle’s 25th Birthday Party.
While watching ‘Being Lara Bingle’ on television, skulls were used for Lara’s 25th Birthday. Lara Bingle is an Australian Promo Model who features in a reality television show with her brother Josh, her mum Shannon and her manager, Hermione. The television is program is quite humorous and Bingle appears to be an adventurous sort of person.
In the latest episode, Joshua Bingle visits a cake store and speaks to an employee who begins to sketch an image of a skull for Lara’s birthday cake. At the birthday dinner, skulls are used as decorations for the tables and there are literally skulls in every space or corner. Lara Bingle also received a giant skull birthday cake, which is adorned with pink and red butterflies.
I didn’t really expect Lara to actually have an interest for skulls, which invites one to speculate whether the skull is only seen as a popular trend or icon. The image of the skull has really reached the limit and even Lara Bingle’s 25th birthday party demonstrates an ongoing fascination with the skull in the consumer culture.
While watching Lara Bingle’s birthday dinner, the skull became another image that has been used for glamour and high fashion. The commercialisation of the skull may diminish its connection with the subject of death, which may cause the skull to become another commodity that is lost in a society that is heavily engrossed with mass consumption. How far does one need to go to find a connection with death?
